Barret is a mindful and compassionate person who has been practicing Massage Therapy since 2002, when he graduated from the Chicago School of Massage Therapy. Barret is Nationally Certified in Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork and also holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Northwestern University. During his course of study, Barret gained the knowledge and hands-on training necessary to give both relaxation and therapeutic massage sessions. Barret continues to supplement his education and knowledge of bodywork by having taken courses in Shiatsu. He is also working towards his accreditation in Bowenwork™. Barret’s approach to massage therapy is based on his belief in the body’s innate ability to heal itself. By listening to how his clients describe their health situation, and paying attention to their body language during a session, an environment is created where healing is encouraged to happen. What is Bowenwork™? Relatively new to the U.S., Bowenwork™, also called Bowen Technique, is currently taught and practiced in 21 countries around the world. Developed by Tom Bowen, this non-invasive healing system often leads to improvement in a wide range of conditions with few sessions; muscular-skeletal problems, sports injuries and conditions such as asthma, headache, menstrual irregularities and hay fever. From the mid ‘50s until his death in 1982, Tom Bowen treated thousands of patients a year in his clinic in Geelong, Australia. Unlike some types of massage, acupressure or chiropractic treatments, Bowenwork™ uses no heavy manipulation or painful pressure. A session, 15 - 50 minutes long, is so gentle and relaxing that clients often fall asleep. The body starts the process of self-repair during a Bowen session. Each specific series of gentle muscle and connective tissue “moves” sends signals to the body for tissues to move themselves toward balance. The client rests quietly between each set to allow the body to integrate the new information. Bowenwork™ can be applied safely and effectively on anyone from babies to the aged and immobile. Bowen Technique works in a subtle way over time. While many clients feel benefits immediately after the first session, even if they don’t, their bodies continue to readjust during the following days. The rate at which the body assimilates the changes varies in each individual. Often, major physical and emotional restrictions release without discomfort. Muscles relax; fluids circulate better; organ systems balance. A second Bowenwork™ session reinforces and fine-tunes the effect of the first. Major shifts and changes can occur after the second or third session. Chronic problems may take longer. After a Bowenwork™ session, clients may experience some soreness or fatigue or other mild-but-puzzling sensations. Old pains may shift around before leaving for good. This is part of the body’s self-readjustment.
